Issue:
How to print or plot in black except for one layer or color in AutoCAD.If you have a Word document that contains color text or graphics but you want to print it in black and white or grayscale, you can do so by changing your printer properties. The options you have available depend on the type of printer you have. Click the File tab, and then click Print. The print dialog in some browsers might do away with ads when you print a web page but Microsoft Edge doesn’t. Instead, it gives you a photocopy of the web page, colors and all, to send to your printer. That doesn’t mean Edge can’t send a black & white print job to your printer. You just need to know how to change the color settings.
Solution:
To do this use one of the solutions below:- Using a copy of the monochrome.ctb plot style, assign the desired layer as a TrueColor or RGB color rather than an Index color. (TrueColor selections will plot color without respect for the color set in the CTB file).
- Using a copy of the monochrome.ctb plot style, assign one color to plot a specific color or select Use Object Color.
- Set up Layout viewports to show and plot the colors to be plotted:
- Enter model space through the viewport (double-click inside the viewport or select Model from the Status bar)
- Open the Layers palette (LAYER).
- Use CTRL+A to select all the layers.
- Click one of the color boxes in the VP Color column.
- When the dialog box opens, select Black (or 250).
- Select OK.
- Note the layers of objects in the drawing that should be displayed in color.
- In the Layers palette, change those layers in the VP Colors column to the desired color.
- Plot using a color based plot style, or create a customized copy of the monochrome.ctb that plots only the desired colors as noted above.
- Copy the objects at basepoint 0,0 and 2nd point 0,0.
- Move objects to a new layer and color.
- Turn off both layers, then turn all other layers.
- Temporarily change those layers to Black or color 250.
- Turn the new layer on.
- Plot.
Versions:
2017; 2014; 2015; 2016; 2019; 2020; 2018;Overprintpreview provides an onscreen simulation that approximates blending andoverprinting in the color-separated output. Overprinting effectscan also be simulated when you output to a composite printing device. Both of these methods are useful for proofing color-separated documents.
Compare appearance of artwork onscreen (left) with printedartwork (right).
Whenyou print a color-managed RGB or CMYK document, you can specify additionalcolor management options to keep color consistent in the output. For example, suppose the document contains a profile tailored forprepress output, but you want to proof the colors on a desktop printer. In the Color Management panel of the AdvancedPrint settings dialog box, you can temporarily convertthe document’s colors to the color space of the desktop printer—theprinter profile is used instead of the current document profilewhen printing. In addition, you can send color data as RGB valuesto printers using various RGB profiles.
When you print a color PDF, all of thecolors used in the file print on one plate. This process is called compositeprinting. The options available in the Output panel of the AdvancedPrint Setup dialog box depend on the selected printer.
Artworkthat will be commercially reproduced and that contains more thana single color must be printed on separate master plates, one foreach color. This process is called color separation. If you’re creating color separations, you can print a color or grayscalecomposite proof to check your work.
Consider the following issues when printing composites:
- Any overprinting options that you select print correctly only on a printer that supports overprinting. Since most desktop printers don’t support overprinting, you can simulate the effects of overprinting by selecting Simulate Overprinting in the Output panel of the Advanced Print Setup dialog box. Be aware that selecting Simulate Overprinting converts spot colors to process colors for printing. If you intend to use a file for final output, do not select this option.
- When you print to a black-and-white printer, a grayscale composite version of the pages is produced (unless you select Print Color As Black in the main Print dialog box; this option prints all nonwhite color as black). If the document contains color, visually correct grays are used to simulate that color. For example, the gray that simulates a 20% tint of yellow is lighter than a 20% tint of black, since yellow is visually lighter than black.
Note:
Remember that, like monitors, color printers vary greatly in color reproduction quality; thus, proofs from your service provider are the best way to verify how the finished piece will look.
- Choose Document And Stamps from the CommentsAnd Forms menu to print all visible content.
- Click Advanced, and select Output on the left side ofthe dialog box.
- Specify other color and output settings, and click OK.
- If the document contains objects with transparency settings, select an option from the Transparency Flattening Presetmenu.
- (PostScript printing only) In the PostScriptOptions panel, specify options.
To produce high-quality separations,it helps to be familiar with the basics of printing, including linescreens, resolution, process colors, and spot colors.
If you are using a print service provider to produce separations, you’ll want to work closely with its experts before beginning eachjob and during the process.
To reproducecolor and continuous-tone images, printers usually separate artworkinto four plates—one plate for each of the cyan (C), yellow (Y),magenta (M), and black (K) portions of the image. When inked withthe appropriate color and printed in register with one another, these colors combine to reproduce the original artwork. The processof dividing the image into two or more colors is called color separating, and the films from which the plates are created are called the separations.

Acrobat supports host-based separations andin-RIP separations. The main difference between them is where theseparations are created—at the host computer (the system using Acrobatand the printer driver) or at the output device’s RIP.
For host-based separations,Acrobat creates PostScript information for each of the separationsrequired for the document and sends that information to the outputdevice. For in-RIP separations, the work of separating a file isperformed by the RIP. This method often takes less time than creatinghost-based separations, but it requires a PostScript 3 output devicewith in-RIP separation capability. To produce in-RIP separations, you need a PPD file that supports in-RIP separations, and any PostScript3 output device or a PostScript Level 2 device whose RIP supportsin-RIP separations.
- Calibrate your monitor. See Calibrate and profile your monitor.
- Specify whether the document contains trapping information, if known. See Declare the presence of trapping information.
- Preview separations and transparency flattening results. See Preview color separations and Preview which areas of artwork will be flattened.
- Run preflight inspections using desired criteria. See Preflight profiles.
Note:
If you use a print service provider to produce separations, you’ll want to work closely with its experts before beginning each job and throughout the process.
- Choose an option from the Comments and Forms menu.
- If you created a custom printer settings file with theappropriate separation settings, choose it from the Settings menuat the top of the Advanced Print Setup dialogbox.
- Select Output on the left, and choose an option fromthe Color menu:
- Choose Separations if the PPD doesn’t supportin-RIP separations.
- Choose In-RIP Separations if the PPD supports in-RIPseparations. Trapping options appear. From the Trapping menu, chooseAdobe In-RIP or Off. If you choose Adobe In-RIP, click TrapPresets and select a preset. Click OK.
- Specify settings for halftone screen frequency and theangle at which the selected ink’s halftone screen is rotated.
- If the document contains objects with transparency settings, select an option from the Transparency Flattening Presetmenu.
- Under Ink Manager, deselect anycolor you don’t want to separate. The four process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black)always appear at the top of the color plate list, followedby spot colors in alphabetical order.
- Clickthe Ink Manager button to modify ink settingsfor color separations.
- Click Marks And Bleeds on theleft, and select All Marks.
- Click PostScript Options on theleft, and select settings as needed. Click OK to close the dialogbox, and then click OK again to print the separations.

Declare the presence of trapping information (Acrobat Pro)
If you are sending your PDF files to a printservice provider, you can use the Document Properties dialogbox to specify whether a PDF contains trapping information. Thisdetail can help prevent the service provider from adding potentiallyconflicting trapping commands to the file. Trapping informationcan either be imported with other PostScript information from theauthoring application, or it can be created in Acrobat using trappingpresets supported by Adobe In-RIP Trapping.
- Choose an option from the Trapped menu, and click OK.The file contains trapping information. The file doesn’t contain trapping information. You don’t know whether the file contains trapping information.
Dependingon the prepress software available, a service providermay be able to perform such prepress activities as trapping, imposition, separating, and OPI replacement at the output device’s RIP. Therefore, your service provider may prefer to receive a composite PostScriptfile of the document optimized for in-RIP separations ratherthan a preseparated PostScript file.
Saving the file as PostScript preserves the separation settings, the PPD information, and any color conversions you have specifiedin the Advanced Print Setup dialog box.
For best results when generating PostScript for reuse in a printproduction workflow, use the Save As commandrather than the Print To File option available inthe Print dialog box.
